Algae are photosynthetic, like plants, but because they lack the many distinct organs such as leaves or roots they are not considered as plants.












Algal growth is high in nutrient rich, shallow coastal waters and as more light penetrates the water’s surface as more the algae flourish.


The first layer of fouling is “slime” – billions of single- or multi-cellular  algae that form colonies on the hull. It doesn’t wash off when the boat moves through the water, it needs to be cleaned off.
